About DeSoto
One of several cities that is part of an area in North Texas known as the Best Southwest, DeSoto is also one of the oldest communities in North Texas. Settled first in 1847, DeSoto was later named for Thomas Hernando DeSoto Steward, the town doctor. After World War II, the DeSoto region experienced a business boom, leading to immense population growth. By 1949 the city was incorporated and annexed Woodland Hills shortly thereafter. City development began to be a big focus of the city in the 1990s when officials took an abandoned strip to turn into DeSoto’s Town Center. Now, the Town Center has a public library, chamber of commerce and an amphitheater. Due to its involved community, DeSoto was named an “All-American City” in 2006.
