About Ovilla
Ovilla, the oldest town in Ellis County, began as a fortified settlement in 1844. In 1847, settlers began to flock to the area to attend meetings of the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The church was forced to meet in a brush arbor until a church and schoolhouse was built in 1853. Ovilla remained unnamed until the 1850’s when the wife of Reverend D. G. Molloy formed the name from the Spanish word villa. By the early 1900s, Ovilla boasted a bank, post office, cotton gin, pharmacy, blacksmith and several dry goods stores. The city was finally incorporated in 1963 and now has about 4,000 residents.
